OBITUARY
Mr. Frederick Carter 77, of Lehigh Acres, FL passed away April 12, 2016.
Frederick Lawrence Carter was born on November 20, 1938 in Fort Myers, Fl. He was the second oldest child of Lewis and Mattie Carter. His siblings preceded him in death, Lewis Carter III and Sandra Eugenia Carter of Fort Myers, FL.
Frederick was a gifted athlete playing football and baseball at Dunbar High School. In 1955, as the sophomore quarterback lead his team the Dunbar Tigers to a Regional Championship.
While playing baseball in high school, Frederick was scouted by the Negro League Player “Buck O’neil” of the Chicago Cubs. During his senior in high school he was offered a football and voice scholarship to Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach FL. Frederick was also offered a football scholarship to Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, where he earned a B. S. in Health/Physical Education and a minor in Biology.
At Lane College, Frederick was a standout on the football field and a certified man of distinction of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Following graduation from Lane College, Frederick returned to his hometown of Fort Myers, FL and was hired as the Director of Recreation in the Dunbar area.
Frederick began his coaching career at Smith Brown High School in Arcadia, FL. After his teaching stint at Smith Brown School, Frederick began to be affectionally known as “Coach Carter”.
Coach Carter taught Health and was assistant football and basketball coach. Later in Lee County Coach Carter taught at Franklin Park Elementary School, Orang River Elementary School and Suncoast Middle School. He taught in Miami Beach Florida at Leroy D. Fineberg Elementary School.
After studying photography, Frederick constructed his own dark room. There he experimented with different photography techniques.
Among Frederick’s diverse interest were: writing, poetry, essays and even a play that was titled:
Departure from the Homeland in 1998. Frederick and his wife produced and printed a newspaper: The Vantage Point News and a magazine the CNS News.
A lifetime learner, he was an avid reader of philosophy, biographies, and spiritual enlightenment.
As a young adult living in Arcadia, Coach Carter began playing golf and tennis. Tennis became one of his passions. He studied the game, played the game, taught tennis to adults and youth (two of his daughters were # 1 seeds in high school), organized tennis tournaments, played in charity tennis tournaments in Desoto County, Highland, Sarasota and Lee counties and played team tennis in Charlotte County.
As a community activist, Coach Carter conducted free golf and tennis clinics for the youth of DeSoto County. Coach Carter frequently, organized and coordinated recreation activities for after school and summer programs at the Smith Brown Gym in Arcadia, FL.
Due to health reasons he ended his teaching career, but remained active in the community. He maintained his involvement in the community by coordinating activities such as the 40 Plus Spelling Bee, Trivia Club, assisting his wife with the Monarch Pageants, and participating in local golf tournaments, and playing golf with family and friends. He was ecstatic to have the Easter Classic basketball tournament with team Coach Carter vs team Coach Bowers in Arcadia to honor African America Coaches in the community.
Frederick resided in Arcadia FL for over 45 years, and recently returned to Lee County, the county of his home town.
Frederick is survived by his loving wife of 53 years – Charlotte Hill Carter and there four daughters which were his proud and joy:
Romona Carter Gollman (Mack) of Lehigh Acres, Vonda Carter Morrison (Kelvin) of Bryan, Texas, Tonya Carter of College Station, Texas and Dr. Falana Carter Staples, (Ernesto) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Frederick was a proud grandfather of grandchildren:

Granddaughter – Taylor Nicole Morrison (Bryan, Texas)
Grandson – Malik Marquise Gollman (Lehigh Acres)
Granddaughter – Alexis Nicole Gollman (Lehigh Acres)
