Helen L. Phillips
Longtime member of the United Church in Walpole, MA, Helen Louise Phillips died peacefully at home August 28, 2017 at 91 years of age.  She was the beloved wife of Russell S. Phillips to whom she had been married for 65 years.  Born in Hartland, ME, on May 14, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Merrill A. Moore and Bertha Gilliatt Moore.  She was pre-deceased by a sister, Margaret Moore Francis, and a brother, Douglas James Moore.  She leaves numerous nieces, grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephews, and one goddaughter.  
Mrs. Phillips graduated from Hartland Academy in 1944; Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority and earned a BA in 1948; Boston University with a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in 1960 and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) in 1969.  She also received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Mount Ida College, Newton, MA in 2004.
She taught for two years at Hartland Academy followed by one year of secretarial work at the then Deaconess Hospital in Boston and another year of secretarial work at Mount Ida College.  Following that she taught at Mount Ida College for 40 years and became Director of the Business School.  When she retired from teaching she was appointed an Overseer for 3 years at Mount Ida and then a Trustee for 9 years.  During her tenure as a Trustee she co-chaired the Centennial Celebration, revised the Trustees policies and procedures and created a Handbook for the members.  Having completed the last two projects, she became a Trustee Emerita.
Throughout her working lifetime, she was an active member of many professional organizations including the Massachusetts, New England and National Business Education Associations, Professional Secretaries International; Pi Lambda Theta (Honorary Academic Society); and Delta Pi Epsilon (Honorary Business Educators Society).
Her special educational activities included joining a teaching team in Nairobi, Kenya during the summer of 1972.  Secondly, she co-authored the textbook, “Technical Typewriting” in the 1960’s.
She was a member of the United Church of Walpole, MA and a past member of the following committees:  Altar, Christian Education and Chair; History and Records; Nominating; and Prudential.
In addition to the foregoing activities, Mrs. Phillips and her husband, Russell, were avid travelers, having visited 30 countries and 26 states.  They also liked to read, and enjoyed their years together at New Pond Village in Walpole, MA.
Family and friends are kindly invited to attend a Memorial Service that will be held on September 23, 2017 at 10AM at the United Church in Walpole, MA.  A reception will follow.  At a later date, a private committal service will take place in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Hartland, ME.
