James Douglas “Doug” Hert of Scandia, died on Thursday, January 14, at The St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA, following a lengthy battle with COVID-19. Doug was born June 16, 1961 in Miami, FL, the son of the late Charles E. Hert, and Nedra Mathis Hert, who survives. Doug graduated from high school in Walkersville, MD, and soon after his family became residents of Scandia. Living on the hill was perfect for Doug because he was an avid outdoorsman and really enjoyed the hunting and fishing in the surrounding area. Doug was a self-employed contractor, and most recently was a certified ASHI Home Inspector. Doug formed Elk Town Archers and was instrumental in bringing the Cabela's Archery and Walleye Tournaments to Warren from 1996-2000. He also formed the Team Scandia/Hoover Oil Field Supply Soap Box Derby Team. The team participated in the Jamestown Soap Box Derby, many rally races in the area, and several members participated in the All American Soap Box Derby World Championship held annually in Akron, OH. In addition to his mother Nedra, he is survived by his wife, Karen L. Curnow Hert, whom he married October 29, 1988; two sons, Bradley Hert, who serves in the US Navy stationed in Norfolk, VA and attached to the USS Harry S.Truman; Marcus Hert, his fiancé Chelsea, and son Riley of Jamestown, NY; a sister, Terri Ludwig and husband Dave, Warren, PA; and several nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his father Charles “Chuck” Hert in 2001, and his brother Randy Hert in 2020. Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc., 1003 Penna. Ave East, Warren, on Wednesday, January 20, from 3 to 5 pm. A funeral service will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Scandia Volunteer Fire Department.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family at this time. I graduated with Doug from Walkersville High School (Class of 1979). I had not seen Doug in a number of years but do remember having a great discussion with him at a past reunion. He talked a lot about his family and doing the things he loved to do. We talked about high school days as we were in the same home room for several years. Great guy! Very genuine!
