Flameless Cremation

Environmentally Friendly Flameless Cremation
Now Available in Pike County

Niebur Funeral Homes now have the opportunity to offer their families another choice of disposition for their loved ones….a gentler, environmentally friendly choice…Flameless Cremation!

Flameless cremation uses water instead of fire. Alkaline hydrolysis is essentially an accelerated form of the process which takes place in natural cycle of life. In everyday terms, were it not for alkaline hydrolysis, we couldn’t process our food into nutrients for our bodies. This occurs in our small intestines at a pH of 8 aided by enzymes.

At the end of life, to achieve the breakdown process of alkaline hydrolysis, a combination of gentle water flow, temperature, and alkalinity are used to accelerate the natural course of breakdown accomplished by our ecosystem. The process uses 95% water and 5% alkalis. The alkalis used are also found in common cosmetic products, body washes, shaving creams, and many household products. Once the cycle is complete, the body has been returned to its natural form, dissolved in water. Remember our bodies are about 65% water to begin with!

The flameless cremation process destroys all pathogens, including prions. There is no DNA, no RNA, and is completely sterile. The sterile water mixture is recycled to the eco-system. “Ash” remain is returned to the family in the same manner as it is with flame cremation, however, it is lighter in color because it is clean and without carbon discoloration.

When compared to flame cremation, alkaline hydrolysis uses less energy and releases no air pollution, smoke, mercury emissions or particulate matter into the atmosphere. Pacemakers and/or other prosthesis, as well as other mechanical devices or implants, CAN be left in the deceased.

Though new to the funeral industry, alkaline hydrolysis has been used by the Department of Anatomy at MAYO Clinic since 2006 for bodies donated to medical science. UCLA Donated Body Program recently started using alkaline hydrolysis because it prevents the release of emissions and helps protect the earth’s natural resources.

Benefit to Families. Flameless cremation offers families the opportunity to contribute to a gentle, greener process. Families can make a lasting contribution to the environment on behalf of their loved one by making a decision that saves energy and reduces pollution. The traditional funeral ceremony and returning of the ashes remains unchanged.
