William J. Werner, 66, of Shelbyville died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born Jan. 23, 1945, in Batesville, he was the son of Paul and Loretta (Schumacher) Werner. He married Elvira Borgman on June 6, 1970, and she survives.

Other survivors include sons, Kevin (Trisha) Werner of Noblesville and Bradley (Jamie) Werner of Brownsburg; grandchildren, Madelyn Werner, Noah Werner, Ethan Werner and Ella Werner; sister, Mary Jeanne (Jerome) Rennekamp of St. Leon; brothers, Gerald (Michele) Werner, Thomas (Janice) Werner and Robert Werner, his twin, all of Batesville, Ronald (RuthAnn) Werner of Greenfield, Paul (Joyce) Werner Jr. of Cincinnati, Keith (Patty) Werner of Maryland and Doug (Carolyn) Werner of Ohio; brother-in-law, Gerry (Debbie) Borgman; sister-in-law, Merita Werner; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Werner was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam War, and was very proud of all of his brothers for serving in the armed forces and of his nephew, Ryan, who is currently serving. He was a true believer in the American flag and proudly displayed it daily at his home.

He was employed as an inspector at General Motors for 32 years before retiring in 2004.

His favorite pastime was watching his grandchildren. He also enjoyed working on classic cars; attending classic-car trade shows; tinkering in his garage, repairing anything and everything; woodworking; and maintaining his landscaped yard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service & Crematory, 703 S. Harrison St., with the rosary recited at 3:30 p.m. prior to visitation.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent Catholic Church, 4218 E. Michigan Road, with the Rev. Paul Landwerlen officiating.

Burial with graveside military rites will be at noon Wednesday at the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery in Batesville.

Aunt Elvira, Kevin and Tricia, Brad and Jamie;
Sending you love and prayers for comfort during this difficult time. Know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers. May God wrap his arms around you and provide you with love and comfort. Uncle Bill was a wonderful person full of love for all of you and the rest of the family. May he be united with Grandma and Grandpa and look down upon all of you with much love.
