Glenn Martin Rhoades, 93, went to be with his creator at 12:42 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011.
Born Jan. 25, 1918, in Ohio Township in the southwest corner of Bartholomew County, he was the son of Martin Melvin and Maude Merle (Gresham) Rhoades. He never met his father, who died of influenza in the summer of 1917, so his mother raised him and three older brothers with the help of her parents, Grandma and Grandpa Logan. After all her boys had graduated, she married again, Charles Noblitt. Glenn married Phyllis S. Kline on Jan. 31, 1945, in Tampa, Fla., and she preceded him in death on July 23, 1995. He married Linda Maye Jones on May 6, 2000, in Lake Placid, Fla., and she survives.
Other survivors include daughters, Jill Stainbrook of Indianapolis and Julie Glover of Shelbyville; son, J.P. Stainbrook of Columbus; grandchildren, Nicole Kurtel and Chelsea Kurtel of Indianapolis, Shaylee Perdue of Southport, Jerrica Glover and Tony Glover of Shelbyville and J.J. Stainbrook of Columbus; great-granddaughter Nakyiah Glover of Shelbyville; sister-in-law, Thelma Edith (Stilabower) Rhoades of Lake Placid; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; and brothers, Ronald Roberts Rhoades, Clyde Clayton Rhoades and Gene Alden Rhoades.
Mr. Rhoades attended a one-room schoolhouse where his mother was the teacher, graduated from Columbus High School in 1935 and worked for Noblitt-Sparks Industries Inc., which later became Arvin's. He retired from Allison Detroit Diesel after 30 years, March 1951 to March 1981, as a toolroom machinist.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, joining at Fort Benjamin Harrison on Oct. 23, 1941, and attended radar repairman school at Drew Field, Fla. He served in the Aleutian Islands for two years and was honorably discharged on Dec. 15, 1944.
Mr. Rhoades was a member of American Legion Post No. 70, Moose and F&AM, all in Shelbyville, Order of Eastern Star No. 390 in Greenwood and a past member of Eagles Aerie No. 766 and the Shriners.
His greatest love was church and God, spending time with family and friends, playing Yahtzee and card games, NASCAR, high school basketball games and reading.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St., and from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Evangelical United Church of Christ, 2630 S. Miller St.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Burial will be in Miller Cemetery in Shelby County, with graveside military rites conducted by local veterans organizations.
