Helen Mayrene Griffey passed away Sunday, May 12, 2019. Mayrene’s life was centered on her firm belief in God and her devotion to her family.

She was born June 4, 1923, the daughter of Robert and Helen (Dean) McCracken.

During WW 11, she traveled to Alaska to marry the love of her life, Robert Griffey, while he was serving in the Coast Guard at the Sitka Naval Operation Base.  Their wedding was on January 11, 1945 and they shared their lives together until Bob’s death in 1999.

Mayrene was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Scott Griffey, and her sisters, Phyllis Voegerl and Betty Ash.

She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Cindy (Tom) Gruesser and Jan Itce; her son, Greg (Kim) Griffey and her daughter-in-law, Kathy Griffey. Also surviving to cherish her memory are eight grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mayrene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Anne’s Altar Society.  Well known in Shelbyville as The Avon Lady, Mayrene loved selling Avon products for over 40 years.  Mayrene would never be seen without wearing her lipstick!  She enjoyed her time with Bob on their motorcycle, taking cross country trips with the Blue River Motorcycle Club.  Mayrene was also an avid Chicago Cubs Baseball fan.  Her passion in later life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.

   Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Services, 703 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Noon at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Paul Landwerlen officiating.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School, 228 E. Hendricks St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Funeral Directors, Greg, Sheila, and Stuart Parks are honored to serve the Griffey family.

Mayrene was my cub scout den mother. Had some great times at her house. She had a grade school party for Scott where we had a lot of fun and learned to dance. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family. I will always remember her as a great lady.

My thoughts & prayers are with all of the family. Many fond memories of Mayrene. She was my wife's (Chris) godmother; and also my son (William). I remember her coming over at our house with the "Avon" items. She was great! Now she is with her husband; my wife Chris and many others in heaven. She will be missed by all.
