Rick Ben Lawson, 65, of Shelbyville, Indiana, passed from this life at 7:53 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at his residence.

Born, November 19, 1953, in Columbus, he was the son of Ben and Dorothy (Murray) Lawson.  He attended Northside Junior High School, and graduated from Columbus High School in 1972. 

Right after graduation, Mr. Lawson worked for Bruce Bottoms Advertising Agency and Cummins Engine Company.

Always having an aptitude and interest in art, and having won various awards and gold keys in high school, he pursued his studies in graphic arts at the renowned John Herron School of Art, in Indianapolis, in 1975.

Mr. Lawson moved to Sedona, Arizona, about 1979 and worked at Sculptor Service working in the lost wax bronze casting process, chasing the waxes for famous western artist’s sculptures.

Since that time, his job included working for R. Sullivan & Associates, Sieco, Inc., and the DaVinci Advertising Agency.

In February 1991, Mr. Lawson became the vice president of marketing at the Columbus based Taylor Professional Marketing, Inc., advertising, marketing and public relations agency, where his primary responsibility and duties were in new business development, art, and design.  In 1993, Mr. Lawson was the artist for Williams Industries, Inc., in Shelbyville, Indiana, working there about 13 years.  He received computer training at Ivy Tech State College.  About 2005, he left Shelbyville for a product and packaging design position, Novelty, Inc., of Greenfield, Indiana, and was one of fourteen artists, remaining there for about 10 years.  In 2015, Mr. Lawson left Novelty, Inc., and began his retirement.

He was a fan of Indiana University basketball, enjoyed fishing, and was an avid golfer.

Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife, Catherine, of Shelbyville, a daughter, Willow S. Lawson (by his first wife, Anita Klinglesmith) and Willow’s husband, Dan Aibel of Brooklyn, New York; grandchildren, Sonja E. Aibel and Max H. Aibel, both of Brooklyn, NY; daughters, Julia M. Dunlap of Brown County, IN; and Alison B. (Dale) Likens of Columbus; grandchildren, Vanessa Staublin of Indianapolis; Tristan Likens and Carson Likens of Brown County; Neal Likens and Jerry Likens of Columbus; brothers, Sam D. Lawson and Randy J. (Peggy) Lawson, both of Columbus; nephews Jon C. (Olsa) Lawson, of Columbus; Paul J. (Shay) Lawson, of North Vernon, Benjamin M. (Jessica) Lawson, Chicago, Illinois; and Tyler J. Lawson, of Noblesville, Indiana;  nieces, LeAnn (Chris) Hubbell, of Topeka, Kansas; Wanda (Jeremy) Carter, of Flower Mound, Texas; and Jessica A. (Greg) Linneweber, of Westfield, Indiana; grand-nieces Tatem R. Lawson, of Columbus; Oceana Carter of Flower Mound, Texas; and Isabella S. Hubbell, of Topeka, Kansas; grand-nephews, Lucas Teddy Lee Lawson, of Columbus; and Shepard G. Linneweber, of Westfield, Indiana; great-granddaughter, Jessica Likens, of Brown County, Indiana; and Goddaughter, Nora K Rife, of Shelbyville, Indiana; and a host of Aunts and Uncles.

Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Rufus and Quinnie B. Lawson and Clurie and Vella C Murray.

As per Mr. Lawson’s wishes there will be no viewing or funeral service.  A private family graveside service will be held in Garland Brook Cemetery.

Arrangements are handled by Murphy-Parks Funeral Services.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, the Cancer Society, or the donor’s choice of charities.
