Shirley (Red) Ledford passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
He was born May 24, 1929 in Crab Orchard Kentucky. He was the son of John and Maggie (Souders) Ledford. He moved to Indiana when he was 15 years old. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. He served during the Korean War 1953-1955. Mr. Ledford loved the land and was a farmer before going into the service. He worked at the Shelby County Highway from 1955-1963. He also worked at Indiana Gravel as a heavy equipment operator and at Shelby Material for 12 years.
He was a coon hunter. He raised treeing Walker coonhounds and was a member of the Sportsman Club for many years.
Red, as most friends called him, like playing cards at the American Legion each morning with his buddies. He raised tomatoes and sold tomatoes for several years each summer. He was known as “the tomato man”.
He loved being outside working in the yard and garden. He enjoyed spending time with his sons and grandchildren and Barney, his dog.
On September 21, 1957 he married Martha Taylor. They were married for 60 years. They had three sons, Bruce (wife, Mary) Ledford, Bryan Ledford, and Kenny Ledford who preceded him in death.
Other survivors are his grandchildren, John (Kendra) Ledford, Shelbyvile, Michelle (Adam) Woodall, Crystal Ledford, Ellie Demaree, Lauren Demaree and great-grandchildren, Carson Woodall, Konnor Ledford, Carley Lynn Woodall, Ryleigh McGinnis, Kenyon Foxx and Kyanna Foxx.
He was preceded home by his son, his parents, 6 brothers, Willard, Coy, Roosevelt, Kelly, Chester, Birch and 7 sisters, Mary, Opal, Dovie, Murtle, Ellie May, Mossie, John Eva and Gary Lee, who he helped raise.
He will be laid to rest in Lewis Creek Cemetery at Wilson’s Corner on Friday, May 25, 2018.
Reverend Harvey Weaver will officiate the graveside service.
