Thomas J. Howley, 79, of Boggstown, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Franciscan Health Indianapolis.

He was born July 8, 1938 to Fred and Velma (Roberts) Howley, in Madison, IN.  He married Sandra (Shaw) Howley on November 23, 1966, and she survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Lynn Howley and son Jerry (wife, Amy) Howley all of Boggstown; grandchildren, Brady, Logan, and Allison; grand dog, Redwood; and nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Mary Howley and Pat Jones, brother, Charlie Howley, sister-in-law, Wanda (McClusky) Howley, nephews David and Austin, and infant daughter.

Mr. Howley served in the National Guard for 9 years and was discharged in 1965.

He was employed at Indiana Bell from June 16, 1966 to November 10, 1992.

Mr. Howley was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.  He served on the Northwestern Consolidated School Board for two terms.  He was in charge of the Triton Central High School concession stands (famous for the Howley burgers and brats) and fundraisers for several years.  He enjoyed bear hunting for several years in Canada and target shooting.  He was a lifetime member of the NRA.  He and Sandy enjoyed trips every fall to Canada and rock hunting on St. Joseph Island, Ontario.

In 1999, he established the Mr. Indiana Basketball autographed basketball collection and soon after it was finished, the Miss Basketball autographed basketballs.  The boys’ ball was auctioned off in 2001 and the PAW Club Scholarship was established.  The girls’ basketball was auctioned off in 2002 and the money went to further the scholarship.   All living Mr. and Miss Basketball honorees have personally signed the balls in Tom and Sandy’s presence and the signing continues every year at the JR/SR All-Star game (78 Mr. Basketball and 42 Miss. Basketball to date).  The basketballs were eventually donated and placed in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

The rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. on Monday April 9, 2018 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville.  Visitation will follow from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway with Father Mike Keucher officiating.

Burial will be at Boggstown Cemetery.

Funeral Directors Greg, Sheila, and Stuart Parks are honored to serve the Howley family.

Memorial contributions may be given to the PAW Club Scholarship c/o Blue River Foundation, 54 West Broadway, Suite 1, Shelbyville, and IN. 46176 or the Joseph Boggs Historical Society, 2616 N Sand Creek Rd., Boggstown, IN 46110.
