Joseph William Haltom, 81, of Shelbyville, IN. passed away Monday, July 17, 2017 at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin.
Born, August 9, 1935 Joseph was the son of Walter Haltom and Mary Catherine (Reidman) Marks.
Joe married Peggy (Cheatham) Haltom on January 6, 1955 and she survives.
He is also survived by his children; Carolyn (Eugene) Vakerics of Franklin, Cathy (Gordon) Burnes of Shelbyville, Candy (Benny) Mitchell of Vevay, Carmen (Larry) Wheeler of Franklin, Cindy (Rick) Coy of Trafalgar, Steve Haltom of Quemado, NM., and honorary son, Frank Poe of Shelbyville.
Other survivors include his grandchildren; James Burnes, Jennifer Maddox, Melissa Andrew, Jeremy Mitchell, Jamie Mayfield, Tiffany Swopes, Jessica Alberton and Joshua Coy and 18 great-grandchildren, brothers James Haltom and Dan Huesman, sisters Dianna Mullen, Lynda Thomas, Bonnie Steffey, Christy Coomer, Donna Knight, Tamma Trisler, Sandra Brandt, Barbara Crawford, and Linda Sue Worland.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sandra Sue Browers.
Joe was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local #103 since 1959. He retired from the union with 34 years of service and had ran the union’s apprenticeship program from 1970 to 1993.
He was a member of the Edinburgh Masonic Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 766, and preformed community service as a member of the Marietta Volunteer Fire Department, Council Member of the Prince’s Lakes Town Hall and President and Coach of the Nineveh Little League.
Always an entrepreneur, he ran Kokomo Joe’s fishing guide service at Lake Texoma after retirement from the union, worked as licensed real estate agent and broker both before and after retirement, working for Vera Staples Reality, Century 21, R&S Reality as well as Salt Creek Reality. He was also the proprietor of 5 Points Used Furniture.
He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren, great grandchildren and his dog Fluffy. His favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, reading and vegetable gardening.
A private visitation and graveside service for immediate family will be observed with Reverend Jim Coulston officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Joseph may be made to the Shelbyville Public Library, 57 W. Broadway, Shelbyville, IN. 46176.
