James Lawson Heflin, 93, died Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Major Hospital in Shelbyville.

He was born Aug. 18, 1923, to James Monroe Heflin and Lucile Draper Heflin in Shelby County on the farm near Edinburgh where he lived until the last few years of his life.

He loved to regale his family and others with tales of his time playing basketball at Mount Auburn High School, where his team won the Shelby County tournament in 1940. He graduated from Mount Auburn in 1941.

He married Julia Frances Money on Feb. 28, 1948, in the Methodist church in Shelbyville. They lived and worked on the farm until 2013, when they moved to Ashford Place in Shelbyville.

James, known to family and friends as Bud, loved to farm and especially loved to plow with his Case tractor. He also loved to sing and sang in the church choir at Jollity United Methodist Church near Edinburgh, where he was a member, and later at the First Christian Church in Shelbyville.

Survivors include his wife; three children, James Lawson (wife, Lynda) Heflin Jr. Cynthia Heflin (husband, Rodger) Pelo; and Frank Lee (wife, Lisa) Heflin; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

His parents and his sister, Catherine P. Heflin, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be Friday, March 24, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Murphy-Parks Funeral Services. 703 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville IN.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Bill Horner officiating. The burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburg IN.

Funeral directors Greg, Sheila, and Stuart Parks are honored to conduct the services for Mr. Heflin.
