Annie Gushwa, 97, of Alton, Ill., a former Shelbyville resident, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton.

Born Dec. 14, 1912, she was the daughter of Caster and Marian (Hill) Jennings. She married Charles C. Gushwa on June 9, 1934, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1989.

Survivors include daughters, Margaret (husband, William) Musser of Kaneohe, Hawaii, and Mary (husband, James) Benson of Alton; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and a daughter, Susan Khalsa.

Mrs. Gushwa retired as a retail clerk from J.C. Penney on Jan. 1, 1977, after 13 years of service.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 60 years.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service & Crematory, 703 S. Harrison St.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 714 Fair Ave., with the Rev. Corlis Dees officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Dear Mary and Jim,
I was notified of Annie's death by a friend in Shelbyville. I'm sorry that you had to give her up but you can be thankful for the full life she experienced.
In case you don't recognize my name, I'm Stan's (Mhan Rishi's) sister. I will always remember Annie. May you have peace!
