Ruth A. Spriggs, 86, of Shelbyville died Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Major Hospital.

Born July 2, 1923, in Crumpler, N.C., she was the daughter of Arthur and Lucy (Hamilton) McMillan. She married Otis Spriggs, Sr. on Sept. 9, 1947, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1980.

Survivors include her sons, Otis Spriggs Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Joniver B. Spriggs, Mark E. Spriggs, Arthur W. Spriggs, all of Shelbyville; daughter, Stephanie Birdwell of Shelbyville; sister Estelle Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; brother, Kenneth McMillan of Atlanta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Andrew Spriggs; daughters, Alberta Morton and Teresa Gaines; sisters, Juanita Misher, Viola Spellman and Goldie Novelton; brothers, Chris McMillan, Garland McMillan, and Haggard McMillan; and one grandson.

Mrs. Spriggs was a homemaker and had been employed at the historic Shatley Springs Inn in Crumpler.

She had attended school in Gary, W.Va.

Mrs. Spriggs attended Beacon Baptist Church in Shelbyville before following her son, Pastor Arthur W. Spriggs, to Pleasant Heights Baptist Church in Indianapolis in 2005, and was a member of Everflowing Well Church in Bristol, Tenn.

She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Home, 703 S. Harrison Street.

Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor David H. Richards officiating.

Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol.
