John A. Schreiner, 81, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at the Brown County Health and Living Center after a long illness.

Born July 4, 1929, on a farm outside of Middletown, he was the son of John E. and Ruth (MaBee) Schreiner.

Survivors include his former spouse and lifelong friend, Jean Porter; their children, John (Brenda), Susannah (Mike Bush), Jacqui (Jerry Culver) and Shawn (Victoria Garvey); siblings, Marie Herbert, Lucille Youngman, Frank (wife, Dot) Schreiner, Don (wife, Kathy) Schreiner, Betty (husband, Hank) Sandhage and Joan (husband, Denny) Tebbe; grandchildren, Ian Culver, Brooke Culver Marshall, Matthew Bush, Christopher Bush, Gregory Bush, Patrick Bush, Alexander Bush and Carolyn Schreiner; and great-grandson Loki Culver.

He was preceded in death by parents; his son, Kevin Schreiner; and brothers, Bud Schreiner and Jim Schreiner.

Mr. Schreiner spent his childhood on the Middletown farm and attended Decatur County schools.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a staff sergeant serving in Korea from 1951 to 1953 as a member of the 1st Marine Airwing.

Following an honorable discharge, he worked at Wellman's and General Electric, retiring in 1991.

In addition to fossil hunting with his family, Mr. Schreiner spent much of his time traveling, watching, coaching and cheering on girls' fastpitch softball games and was invited to be an honorary assistant coach for the Shelbyville High School varsity team. He continued to coach as health allowed, and cheered on "his girls" through this last season. The highlight of his summer was attending the World Fastpitch Girls' Softball Tournament in Columbus.

He combined integrity, honor, dignity and responsibility with a contagious sense of humor. Family was his all; he was besotted with his children, grandchildren and great-grandson.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Murphy-Parks Funeral Services, 703 S. Harrison St., and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1201 N. Riley Highway, followed by a memorial celebration of his life at 11 a.m. at the church.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery in Greensburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to the Shelbyville High School softball team or to the Brown County Health and Living Center Activities Department in care of the funeral home.

I was so sorry to hear about John. I always remember that he was at our daughter's softball games. At one of their home games Stephanie's Senior year the girls gave him an autographed softball. That would have been the Spring of 2001. He will be greatly missed!
