Gladys L. VanMeter, 80, of Shelbyville died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Ashford Place Health Campus.

Born Aug. 8, 1929, in Scottsburg, she was the daughter of Amos N. and Lula F. (Tash) Richey. She married Oscar "Bud" VanMeter, and he preceded her in death on May 8, 1997.

Survivors include her daughter, Connie (husband, Chuck) Speece of Shelbyville; stepson, Larry (wife, Anna) VanMeter of Huntsville, AL; sister, Lola Grisswald of CA; grandchildren, Chuck, Cory and Craig; step-grandchildren, Karen and Larry; six great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. VanMeter was a homemaker.

She graduated from Scottsburg High School on June 8, 1946, as valedictorian.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28th at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29th at the funeral home, with Jim Nolley officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Shelby County, 425 E. Washington St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Gosh, your Mom was great. If ever a lady was proud of her daughter, it was Gladys. She knew she was loved! She was a special soul, thats for sure. I will miss her too, sorry for your loss.
