Albert A. Koby, 89, of Shelbyville died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Major Hospital.

Born Aug. 7, 1919, in Van Nuys, Calif., he was the son of Frank Koby and Kiyu (Nauhra) Koby. He married Patricia Louise Firsich on Jan. 12, 1963, and she survives.

Other survivors include his son, James Koby of Manilla; niece, Lisa Kenpper of Terre Haute; and nephew, Charles Koby of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Mr. Koby was the owner and operator of Koby Dental Laboratory for 35 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, discharged in January of 1946 as a chief warrant officer. He volunteered as a sergeant major in the Cadre to train other Japanese/American soldiers; was a member of the 442nd Infantry Regimental 'Go for Broke' combat team comprising volunteer Japanese/Americans, the most highly decorated unit of their size and responsible for freeing the lost battalion in the Vosges Mountains of France and capturing an enemy submarine in Nice on the Riviera. He also served in several campaigns in Italy and France and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, European, African and Middle Eastern service medals.

Mr. Koby was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church; lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and former member of the Knights of Columbus Sacred Heart Council No. 822.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Chris Craig officiating.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military rites.

Services have been entrusted to Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St.
