Don went through Drill Sergeant School during my first year with the 70th Division Leadership Academy as a Tactical NCO and the 1st Platoon Leader at Ft. Knox. We went several years before crossing paths at the tail end of my military service when he took an assignment with the 5030th USAR School. Don was one of the most understanding and faithful of individuals I was blessed to work around. An "ol' soldiers soldier" who had been around for many a year and served in multiple branches at that.
I regret reading of his passing and not being able to attend. I myself nearly expired in '09 twice and was laid up from April to the end of October recovering from a kidney refraction and complications because of a large tumor. As Don would say, "I took a lickin', but, I'm still tickin'!"
I salute the man, the soldier, who saw, who came, who served! I pray, "Eternal Rest grant unto Donald A. Schaf, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
