LaVonna M. Cox, 80, of Fairland died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at Major Hospital.

Born Nov. 19, 1928, in Muncie, she was the daughter of Roy F. and Thelma (Wright) Mertz. She married John P. Cox Jr., and he survives.

Other survivors include her sons, Phillip F. (wife, JoAnne) Cox of New Jersey and Joseph C. Cox of West Chester, Ohio; daughters, Lucinda (husband, Marland) Ratekin of Rushville and Monya Byers of Kirklin; brother, Edgar Mertz of Tucson, Ariz.; sister, Phyllis Martin of Montpelier; 10 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Cox retired from Western Electric/AT&T in 1985, after 23 years of service; and from Blue River Special Education in 1992.

She was a member of Northwood Christian Church in Fairland, Sam's Camping Club Chapter No. 72 and a very active member of Eastern Star Chapter No. 359.

Mrs. Cox was a doll collector and spent hours sewing and crocheting.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Fairland Cemetery in Fairland.

I'm so sorry about your mom. I know how hard it is to go through life without a mom. You will remember her always because a child has only one mom and she will always be your best friend.
