Hershel Albert Woolman, 90, of Shelbyville died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Ashford Place Health Campus.

Born June 27, 1918, in Southport, he was the son of Albert P. and Bessie Mable (Monroe) Woolman. He married Mary Jenkins on Nov. 12, 1939, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 28, 2007.

Survivors include his children, Harold Wayne Woolman of Indianapolis, Patricia Ann (husband, John "Bud") Comstock of Fairland, Stephen Randall Woolman of Shelbyville and Cheryl Kay (husband, Steve) Bolt of Covington, Pa.; sister, Helen Johnson of Rossville; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Vera Ferrel, Thelma Pratt, Mary Steenbarger and Evelyn Reed; and brother, Harold Woolman.

Mr. Woolman had been a farmer and employed at Hygrade Packing, retiring in 1967; and with New Tribes Mission for 20 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received the Silver and Bronze stars.

Mr. Woolman graduated from Boggstown High School.

He was a member of Burge Terrace Baptist Church in Indianapolis.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Pastor DeWayne Felber officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by local veteran organizations.

Proud that I was named for Hershel A. Woolman. At my age of 1 day I met him as he left to fight in Europe during World War II.
