Donald E. Sweet Sr., 86 of Shelbyville, died Friday, July 24, 2015, at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.
Born Jan. 21, 1929, in Shelbyville, he was the son of the late James Sweet and the late Cecil (Ewick) Sweet. He married Sally Robbins Sweet on July 30, 1983, and she survives.
Also surviving are son, Donald Sweet Jr. and wife, Linda, of Manilla; daughter, Cindy Schmidt and fiancé, Mike, of Greenfield; stepdaughters, Robin Tillie and husband, John, of New Palestine; Dannette Erickson and husband, Joe, of Shelbyville, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, three sisters and his first wife, Esther I. (Mann) Sweet.
Mr. Sweet served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952, then enlisted in the National Guard in 1977, retiring in 1989.
Mr. Sweet was a member of First Church of the Nazarene.
He was a former owner of the Marietta Gas Station.
He loved watching John Wayne movies, gardening and being a chef. He also was a collector of trains and old money.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at First Church of the Nazarene, 2315 S. Riley Highway, Shelbyville, with Dr. Kenneth Jewell officiating.
Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, with military rites conducted by local veterans organizations.
