Richard Merlyn “Gus” Gustafson, 86, of Fairland, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, at Major Hospital in Shelbyville.

He was born Jan. 24, 1929, to Hjalmar Gustafson and Mable (Johnson) Gustafson in Winthrop, Minnesota. He married Patty (Finecy) Gustafson on October 29, 1951, and she survives.

Other survivors include five daughters: Debbie Tresslar and husband, Kent, of Fairland; Sandra Cecil and husband, Tony, of Fairland; Linda Harrison and Kevin Phares of Indianapolis; Trish Clark and husband, Bob, of Shelbyville; and Angela Redd and husband, Terry, of Shelbyville; three sisters, Joyce Johnson and Shirley Paulson, both of Minnesota, and Margene Vap of Oklahoma; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Gus was a raider in the U.S. Army, serving with The Chosin Few in Korea.

Gus retired from Chrysler and the Fairland Volunteer Fire Department. He also was an electrician.

He was a Mason and a member of the Vasa Order of America, American Legion and the Gen. MacArthur Honor Guard, all in Minnesota.

He was a member of Boggstown Presbyterian Church.

Gus enjoyed woodworking.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, at Boggstown Presbyterian Church, 2488 N. Sand Creek Road, Boggstown.

Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Matthew Downey officiating.

Burial will be at Boggstown Cemetery.

Funeral Directors Greg A. Parks, Sheila J. Parks and Stuart Parks are honored to conduct the services for Mr. Gustafson.
