Mary Ann Kappes Zinser passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, in Shelbyville, at the age of 99.

She was born Sept. 10, 1915, in Batesville, to John Joseph Kappes and Catherine Rose Wissel Kappes.

She graduated from Batesville High School in 1933. She then worked for six years in a dental office to earn money for nursing school. Mary Ann was a registered nurse, having put herself through nurses training at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Covington, Kentucky. After marriage she worked at the Inlow Clinic in Shelbyville.

Mary Ann married Raymond George Zinser on Nov. 14, 1944, and they lived in Shelbyville their entire married lives. Raymond died Dec. 3, 2003. Ray and Mary Ann, together with his sister, Pauline Josephine Zinser Kremer and her husband, Carl Kremer, owned and operated the Chicken and Steak Inn on East Broadway Street for over 30 years. In January 1977, Martin Zinser and Tom Kremer took over ownership of the business.

Mary Ann was active with St. Joseph Catholic Church through St. Anne's Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and many other service projects. She loved playing bridge with her friends, working word search puzzles and being with her dear cat. She was a volunteer at Major Hospital and Meals on Wheels. She also was very proud that she was able to drive herself around town until 2011.

Mary Ann is survived by children: Carole Davis and husband, Robert; Mary Kay Cortelyou and husband, Paul; and Martin John Zinser and wife, Tami Ruschhaupt; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brother, Alfred Kappes; and sisters, Hilda Hodapp and Martha Ann Dierckman.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service with the Rosary being recited at 3:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 127 E. Broadway St., with Father John Maung officiating.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Shelbyville.

Memorial contributions may be given in her honor to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 127 E. Broadway St., Shelbyville, IN 46176; or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 E. 17th St., Columbus, IN 47201-5417.

Our sympathies to your families.

Your family, Mary Ann, Pauline, Raymond and Karl provided great memories for my
family and others. The Chicken & Steak provided great food; especially the Sunday chicken dinners. And it was a safe, clean drive-in for generations of teenagers. Each of them kept an protective-eye on all of their customers (and employees).

To the family of Mary,
God Bless you all at this time. I remember your parents. My dad was a cousin to Raymond. His name was Donald Firsich, married to Kathryn (Kuntz) Firsich. They used to live where Uncle Bud (Hubert) lived. They moved to the farm south of Greensburg in 1951. We will keep you in our prayers. Darlene
