He was born October 6, 1937, to Will Smothers and Odie (Mann) Smothers in Kentucky. He married Bobbi J. Johnson on March 3, 1956, and she survives.
Survivors include: daughters, Ruth (Kevin) Collins of New Palestine, Waunita Smothers (Companion, Mike Weise) of Indianapolis, and Lovia Piatt of Shelbyville; sons, Thomas (Tania) Smothers of Shelbyville, Darin Smothers of Shelbyville, and Levi Childers of Shelbyville; sisters, Christine (Clarence) Chappelow of St. Paul, and Polly Smothers of Shelbyville; brothers, Carl (Jean) Smothers of St. Paul and Earl (Donna) Smothers of Shelbyville; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jonathan Smothers; two brothers and a sister.
He worked for Standard Grocery for 25 years and later retired from Knauf Fiberglass. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a collector of many unique second-hand items. His passion was being involved with his grandkids activities.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service & Crematory, 703 South Harrison St., Shelbyville.
Services will be at 6 p.m. on April 1, 2014, at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service & Crematory with Pastor Andy Lee officiating. A private graveside service will take place at Whispering Hope Memorial Gardens.
