Joyce Scott, 69, a longtime resident of Shelbyville, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Ashford Place in Shelbyville of complications from a heart condition.

She was born June 1, 1944, to Alex Scott and Agnes (Wissel) Scott in Shelbyville. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Raymond; and a niece Lelia Renee.

Joyce entered the world with a daunting journey ahead. At birth she was diagnosed with a serious heart condition and the expectation of a short and restricted life. Joyce worked to overcome this challenge throughout her life.

She loved everything outdoors – sports (especially baseball), traveling and mowing lawns on her riding lawnmower. She helped out in the family restaurant in St. Paul for many years.

Joyce had a very special talent with children. She was able to make them feel important by showing an interest in what they liked and did. Those she met she always remembered, and she continually asked about them as they grew up.

Visitors to Ashford Place were frequently met by Joyce on the porch and she was their ambassador. She always welcomed guests and family members with friendly greetings. Joyce made her life, and those around her, both full and rich.

Joyce was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Shelbyville and lived in Shelbyville, Richmond and St. Paul.

Survivors include three sisters, Jo Dunaway of Indianapolis, Myrna Johnson of Portland, Ore., and Judy (Vernon) Sharp of Shelbyville; four nephews (Thomas Johnson, Alan Capfinger, Kevin Capfinger and Barry Dunaway); and one niece (Renita Straight).

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at Murphy Funeral Home, 703 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service with Father Aaron Pfaff officiating.

Burial will be at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Cemetery.

Funeral Directors Greg A. Parks and Sheila J. Parks are honored to conduct the services for Ms. Scott.
