Dorothy Alene Thomas, born December 30, 1945, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2018 following a brief and sudden illness. She was surrounded by her immediate family.

Dorothy was the youngest of five born to Myrtle and Glover Leach. She grew up in Preble County on State Route 503 and graduated from Lanier High School in 1963. Dorothy wanted to be a nurse from the time she was in third grade and made that
dream come true when she graduated from the Dayton School of Practical Nursing in 1966. She worked in a variety of settings during her 52 year career in nursing, including Miami Valley Hospital, Grandview Medical Center, and several nursing homes before joining Hospice of Dayton in 2003, which was the pinnacle of her career. She personified the mission of Hospice of Dayton and found no greater joy in life, aside from spending time with her family, than providing exemplary care to her patients, providing a calming and educating force for patient’s families, and serving as a tremendous friend and example for her co-workers.

Survivors include daughter, H. Michele Thomas, son, Joshua Thomas (Diana), brother Gary Leach, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and two sweet Golden Retrievers, Hillary and Violet. She is preceded in death by her parents, Myrtle and Glover Leach, sisters Anita Leach and Rita Marcum, and brother Harold Leach, as well as numerous other family members who made her life rich in love, experience, and knowledge of family history. She is also survived by innumerable friends and co-workers who loved her dearly.

Tremendous thanks is extended to the staff of Miami Valley Hospital and Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton, especially Carrie Kerby, NP, Dr. Eshetu Obole, Dr. Agustus K. Eduafo, Heather Douglas, Kristy Brock, Dr. Rana Patel, and Dr. Cleanne Cass.
Donations may be made in honor of Dorothy to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton.

Visitation will be held at Lindloff- Zimmerman Funeral Home in West Alexandria, OH on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM with the funeral service starting at 11:00 AM. Burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery West Alexandria, OH

Aunt Dorothy was a special person to me. She is unforgettable in her own way. I have such great memories of her. She always had a smile and big hug waiting, for mostly all that she greeted. She will never be forgotten. I will miss our talks. She could always make me laugh. She was such a fun person to be around. I will always cherish our memories. RIP Aunt Dorothy

Many thoughts and prayers and my deepest condolences to her family and friends. Dorothy was the sweetest and kindest friend and coworker. I truly looked forward to every time we worked together in caring for our patients. I learned so much from her caring and compassionate care of our patients. We could talk for hours and only see each other months and months apart but it was like we talked everyday. Her kind spirit and soul will be truly missed.
