ACKERMAN, Dr. Gerald Lee, age 65, of Eaton, OH. formerly of Richmond, IN.
died suddenly Tues. Aug. 6, 2013. He was born in Dayton, OH. on Nov. 9,
1947 to Robert A. and Evelyn Jane (Gross) Ackerman. He graduated from
Columbus High School in Columbus, IN. He completed his undergraduate
studies, earned a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery and completed an
orthodontic residency at Indiana University. He was preceded in death by
his parents. He is survived by his wife of 7 years, Susan Ackerman, Eaton,
OH., 2 sons, Bryce (Whitney) Ackerman, St. Louis, MO., Chad (Kelly)
Ackerman, Bloomington, IN., daughter, Lindsey (Doug) Bivens, Indianapolis,
IN., 3 stepsons, Jeff (Mandy) Thompson, Ann Arbor, MI., Grant (Libby)
Thompson, Cleveland, OH., Scott Thompson and Tara Twomley of Atlanta, GA.,
1 grandchild, Sheridan, 4 step-grandchildren, Aurora, Ella, Josie, and Sloane,
his brother, Bob (Patty) Ackerman, Centerville, OH., and sister, Debbie
(Roger) Reeves, Dublin, OH.
Ackerman moved with his family to Richmond in 1977 to begin his orthodontic
practice and soon expanded to Connersville and New Castle, IN. His Richmond
office, a dazzling, state of the art building on Chester Blvd., was built
with an eye on making braces fun for kids! His office included a juke box
and multiple arcade games, and his patient holiday parties encouraged
parents to drop their kids off for music, pizza, skits, and huge giveaways
that included Ataris, tv's, and stereos. He was currently treating third
generations of patients and was very proud of their accomplishments as
reflected on office walls displaying newspaper clippings of their
achievements. His loyal staff were dedicated and looked upon him as a
friend and mentor. Ackerman was actively involved in his kids' sporting
lives growing up, and he played a major role in growing Boston Little League
baseball into a viable option to Richmond's Optimist League. Ackerman was
an avid reader and always enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean and Las Vegas.
Most recently he enjoyed living the more tranquil life of living on a lake
with his wife and cats. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a
charitable donation be made to one of the following organizations: Adult
Day Care of Richmond or Help the Animals of Richmond. Funeral services will
be held at the convenience of the family.

While living in Richmond for 23 years, the Ackerman family were our good friends. Jerry and I coached our sons (Chad & Scott) through the Boston Little League years and were in the stands at all of their high school soccer games which included Bryce for two of those years. We even happened upon the Ackerman family one Spring break while we were strolling a beach in the Bahamas. Those and many others are treasured memories. Jerry will be truly missed and my condolences go out to the entire family.
Sincerely,
Larry Fast

To the family and staff of Dr. Ackerman,
We were so saddened to hear of Dr. Ackerman's passing. I myself had been a patient of Dr. Ackerman's many years ago and all three of my daughters Candace, Jamie & Hannah were all patients of his as well. We adored Dr. Ackerman and thought he was a wonderful, gentle man whose love for children and every patient he served was always evident. My heart breaks not only for the family, but also for his "second" family...all the wonderful staff, many of whom had been with him for many years. I pray for strength, peace, and comfort for each of you in the days ahead. Dr. Ackerman will be missed immensely!! God bless you all.

I am so sad to here of Dr. Ackerman passing. I was a patient of his 30 years ago then came back to him about 15 years ago for some other work. I would not have went to any one else. He was a good man both professional and for the community. He will be greatly missed.
May God wrap his loving arms around his family and give them the strength that they need to continue on in life till they meet again.
The world lost a special person. Rest in peace Dr. Ackerman

Dr. Ackerman was my orthodonist for many years. I started seeing him in first grade and didn't stop until I was in 10th grade. I had a lot of work to be done and Dr. Ackerman did a fine job of giving me a beautiful smile rather than what I would've had otherwise. No one likes the orthodontist but I really didn't mind my visits with him. His staff was wonderful, he was wonderful and the environment was great. Who needs a waiting room when you can go play arcade games until it's your turn? I always loved walking over the "bridge" as well. It was such a neat environment that truly turned my MANY years of braces and other orthodontic work into a much better experience than most have. Dr. Ackerman really put great thought into making this type of enviorenment for kids (and adults) to enjoy. Thank you to his staff and family that supported his excellent orthodontics through the years. I am so saddened to hear of his passing. May all of his friends, family and staff find peace in this tragic time. I know many patients are in shock but so grateful to have met this great man.

We are very sorry to hear of Dr. Ackerman's passing. He put our braces on 35 years ago. We remember all the fun times we had at his office and those Christmas parties were the best. He was always such a kind soul and will always be remembered by us.

I am so surprised and sorry to learn of Dr Ackerman's passing. He was such a generous man with his team at work, with his family, and with his patients. I was lucky enough to learn from him and really appreciated what he taught me. He will be sadly mourned by many, myself included.

I am sad to learn of Dr. Ackerman's passing. He was my orthodontist as a teenager, and then 3 of my children. He was such a kind person, that even when he talked to us, it was heartfelt.
