Theresa Ann Garvey, 88 of Eldridge, Iowa, formerly of Boscobel, Wisconsin passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, May 29th, 2016 with her family by her side at Grand Haven Retirement Community. Theresa was born on February 26, 1928 in Seneca, Wisconsin to Edward and Delia (McNamara) Cody. Theresa was united in marriage to Bernard P.Garvey on December 29, 1953 in Boscobel, Wisconsin at Immaculate Conception Church.

Theresa was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a degree in Elementary Education, where she also pursued her Master’s degree. Theresa began her teaching career in a one room school house and taught elementary education in the Boscobel School district for 32 years.

Educating children was Theresa’s passion and she worked diligently to help all her students. After moving to Iowa, Theresa told everyone she met; she “was a teacher and loved teaching”. Theresa’s dedication to education inspired her to establish the Theresa Garvey Scholarship endowment for graduating Boscobel High School students pursuing a degree in Elementary education.

After her retirement Theresa volunteered countless hours at Boscobel Elementary School and also taught religious education at ICC. Theresa was a talented seamstress and enjoyed making crafts for the church bazaars. She volunteered in the Boscobel Memorial Hospital gift shop. Theresa was a lifelong member of the ICC Altar and Rosary Society. Theresa and her sister MaryEllen were the cake ladies for many years at the annual Chicken Barbecue. Theresa and Bernard enjoyed traveling during retirement, often accompanied by her sister Claudyne. They also enjoyed Hawaii trips to visit her brother Dan.

Theresa is survived by her children, Delia(Kevin) Cahill of Donahue, Iowa; Joan (Robert) Reynolds of DeWitt, Iowa; Bernard M. Garvey of Argyle, Wisconsin; Anne (James) Nemec of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren Alex Cahill of Davenport, Iowa; Tyler Cahill of Des Moines, Iowa; Abbie Cahill of Ames, Iowa; Matt Reynolds of  Washington D.C.; John Reynolds of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; Ellen Reynolds of Iowa City, Iowa; Tessa Nemec and Joseph Nemec of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Francis Garvey M.M.; Thomas Garvey and Lawrence Garvey; sister-in-law Mary Tafelski.

Theresa had moved from Boscobel to Eldridge, Iowa in 2010 to be closer to her devoted daughters. Theresa lived at Grand Haven Retirement Community. The family would like to thank the staff at Grand Haven for their professional and loving care during her years spent with them. The family would also like to thank her special friends and caregivers Debbie and Kaitlyn O’Leary whom she loved like a daughter and granddaughter.

I have many fond childhood memories of the Garvey girls and their parents. My mother's name was also Theresa, and both ladies were deeply devoted to their faith. Both were great seamstresses and each had three daughters! Both lived long purpose-filled lives ... to the age of 88. Now, they both know God's complete Peace.

I wish to express my sympathy to the family. May your memories sustain you and may they become more precious every day!

Theresa Garvey is someone I have known nearly my entire life-since Dee and I were in 1st grade. Over the years, I visited the Garvey home many times. Mrs. Garvey (I was at least 40 before I called her Theresa) was a woman with strong opinions and an even stronger faith. There was never a dull moment in her presence. She has left a wonderful gift with her scholarship fund for future teachers. Even more significant is her legacy that lives on in her children and grandchildren.

Dee, Joan, Annie and Mark,

Ned and I were so sorry to hear of your Mom's death. I know you all went above and beyond in caring for her. Loosing a parent is always such an emotional time but I am sure you have no regrets because of all you did for her. I wish I could be with you. Much Love to you all. Your cousin,

Therese Coyle

Dee, Joan, Anne and Mark--

I'm so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I have many fond memories of both your Mom and Dad. Perhaps the fondest memory and most important to me is the friendship that your Mom and my Mom developed in the later years of both their lives. Our mothers spent many hours on the phone together and I know my Mom was very thankful for their talks. Both of them had strong faiths and I am sure that they are together again in heaven and can continue their friendship there. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this very sad time.

DEAR FAMILY OF THERESA CODY GARVEY: AS SURPRISED AS YOU MAY BE, I AM AN "OLD BOYFRIEND" OF THERESA. WE OFTEN WENT TO DANCES IN THE SOLDIERS GROVE GYM... INCLUDING A PROM AND MY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. NEVERTHELESS, I THOUGHT I HAD A VOCATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND THERESA PLANNED TO CHECK OUT "GTHE MOUND" FUNNY, I COULD SEE THE MOUND FROM MY LORAS COLLEGE DORM WINDOW...HIGH UP . I WAS ORDAINED A DOMINICAN PRIEST IN 1958 AND SAID MY FIRST MASS AT GAYS MILLS, MAY 15, 1958. THERESA AND HER MOM, MRS. CODY ATTENDED AND WE SPOKE RIEFLY AFTER THE MASS. MRS CODY HAD TOLD ME EARLY ON....
"IF YOU ARE ORDAINED A DOMINICAN.... THERE'S $100 IN THAT FOR YOU" SHE KEPT HER WORD.
I PRAY THAT NO ONE WILL BE OFFENDED BY MY BRIEF PERSONAL HISTORY. I HAVE OFTEN REMEMBERED THERESA, WAS HAPPY WHEN SHE MARRIED, AND HAPPIER NOW, KNOWING THAT SHE IS WITH THE LORD WHO SHE LOVED SO DEARLY.
IF ANYONE CARES TO RESPOND, I WOULD BE DELIGHTED . THANK YOU.

I was probably in the first class of "Miss Cody's" first year of teaching in that rural school in Boscobel Wisconsin. I adored her. I wanted to invite her to my birthday party! She used to wear her hair in a pony tail tied with a scarf, and so that's what I wanted to do too. She may very well have influenced my decision to become a teacher. She married over Cheistmas vacation when I was in the first grade, and I remembered telling her that I couldn't remember her married name. She told me it would be okay to continue to call her Miss Cody. She was a special lady for sure.
