Orlie T. Baker, age 98 of Ferryville passed away on Tuesday August 27,
2013 at his home in rural Ferryville. He was born on September 14, 1914
in Seneca Wisconsin. The son of Clarence and Belle (Taylor) Baker. He
married Anne Preston on April 6, 1939 at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 28, 2006. He is survived
by seven sons; Preston (Karen) Baker of Cottage Grove Wi., Sam (Marcia)(Suzie) Baker of Prairie du Chien, Clarence (CR) (Deanna) Baker of Eastman, Orlie (Tom) (Kim) Baker of Prairie du Chien, Harold Baker of
Viroqua, Kenneth (Marlene) Baker of Eastman, Benjamin (Julie) Baker of
West Salem. Four daughters; Belle Anne (Ed) Achenbach of Boscobel, Lana
(Harvey) Sheets of Seneca, Janet Baker (Mark Sprague) both of Sparta,
Patty (Steven) Kvigne of Ferryville. 37 Grandchildren 51
Great-Grandchildren, 10 Great-Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by his parents, a son Jonathan Baker, and a grandson Todd
Achenbach.
Orlie was a graduate of UW-Madison and a member of the Delta Theta Sigma fraternity. He was a farmer and a career educator who taught enduring lessons in the classroom, but also on the riverbanks or on a midnight coon hunting expedition. He had a lifelong curiosity about and respect for nature which involved him in creating a variety of “projects”.
He became a radio personality with “Man on the Street” for WRCO Radio and the popularity of this program led to “Friendly Farmer of the Airway” on stations across Wisconsin and Iowa. His speaking skills led to keynote speaker engagements, Master of Ceremonies for civic organizations and county fairs, and highly sought after lay speaker for churches throughout the area.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday August 31, 2013 at 1:00 P.M.
at the United Methodist Church in Boscobel. Pastor Stan Pegram and
Pastor Jonathan Baker officiating. Burial in the Boscobel Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday August 30, 2013 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the
Kendall Funeral home in Boscobel and at the church on Saturday from
12:00 Noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials can
be given to the Seneca High School Scholarship Fund. On line condolence

Ben my friend,
I was so sad to hear about the passing of your dad. My prayers are with you and my heart goes out to you at this difficult time. No written word can express the legend Orlie was to all. We listened to him for weather patterns, farming hints, local history....and enjoyed every second of what he had to say. He truly was a gentleman and his family is a great reflection of who he is and was. We are blessed with our memories.

You have my deepest sympathy on the passing of Mr Baker. Years ago, he had a radio program on WPRE and when Orlie spoke, us kids were quiet so my dad could listen to what Orlie had to say. It didn't matter whether we were in the barn doing chores or in the house, when that program came on, dad turned the radio up...even the cows knew to keep quiet. Also years ago, CR used to be our substitute milk hauler. May he rest in peace as his work on Earth is now done.

Our deepest sympathy to the Baker family. Orlie will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I have many memories of him in our little Methodist Church in Seneca as a strong Christian man, who always had a smile and warm hello. We have lost a wonderful friend, but our memories of him will live on and make us smile always.

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Some of my best memories of growing up include the Bakers being 'down the road'. Your mom and dad were the sweetest people on earth, and now the sweetest couple in heaven I am sure. We will treasure our time with him and Anne at the Farmer's market. He always called me the little white girl and had names for my girls. We also remember waiting by the radio for him to come on. Our deepest sympathy goes to his big family. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Dear Baker family, John and I had the deepest respect for both your mom and dad. He did the Boscobel Implement ad over wpre radio for many years. He spoke at our church many times always with wit and wisdom!!We loved and admired them as did so many others. Now they are home together again! Dear Baker family. I am sorry for your loss. It has been many years since I have been in contact with any of your family, but Orlie memories abound. He took me duck hunting for the first time and coon hunting for the first time. I was a good friend of Johnathan and one of his pall bearers. I never forgot him. My memories of Orlie include hunting and fishing in the lake and river at the farm outside of Boscobel and enjoying the farm life. Even with such a big family Tom Reid and I were always welcome and invited to dinner or stay overnight. We even got to help with chores, which we thought was fun for us city slickers.
He lived a long and fulfilled life and was a man to be remembered with pride and honor.

My sincerest condolences go out to the family & friends of Mr. Baker. An Icon has left the community but he left behind so much. Cherish those memories.
