From 1960 until 1975, Dan worked at Lewis and Lewis in Hammond, a fuel and petroleum business. In 1975 he and Carolyn ran Bickelhaupt Fuel until 1993. Then in 1993 he worked in fuel delivery  at MX Fuels based in Massena until his retirement in 2009. Angela, Jeff, Lenny and Robyn,

My heart aches for you and your families. Your father was such a good friend to my mother, Ruth, these past few years. I got to sit and talk with him while he visited with Mom. I thank you for sharing him with Mom. He would always talk about you, your families and all of his grandchildren. Know that he was proud of each and everyone of you. He will be missed by many. May the words of how much he was admired by the community bring you peace.

Ann and David

Angela, Lenny, and family, I am sad to read about your Dad's passing. He delivered fuel to three generations of Whalens so we knew him well. I am traveling so am unable to convey my condolences in person. You are all in my thoughts.

To Dan's Family,
Please accept my sincere sympathy in the passing of your Dad and Grandfather. He was such a good man!
I attended Hammond Central School with him and graduated in the same class. It was so nice to be able to return for the celebration after 50 years and find Dan the same person as when I had last seen him many years ago and to meet his "date" Angela. What a wonderful daughter. His kindness shines through. God be with you all during this sad time.
