Norma A. Schmidt, 92, of Laflin, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, August 27, 2017.

Born in Pittston on September 28, 1924, she was the only child of the late Paul and Amelia (Casavecchia) Augustine.

Raised in Browntown, Norma graduated from St. John the Evangelist in 1942, and went on to study business at Wyoming Seminary. In 1957, she married Edward F. Schmidt, with whom she went on to share 56 wonderful years. They moved to Laflin in 1969, where she raised her family and resided until her death.

She was an active member of the Women of Kiwanis and the Reymont Club of Wyoming Valley. Norma was of the Catholic faith and a parishioner of St. Maria Goretti Church.

Above all, Norma was devoted to and loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her two beloved granddaughters. What she enjoyed most was cooking and baking for her loved ones, passing on her exceptional skills and recipes along the way. Her ideal evening involved sitting at her dinner table, surrounded by family and friends, serving the undoubtedly delicious food that she had lovingly prepared for them.

Always laughing, her ever-present smile was contagious to all who met her. Norma had both passion and skill when it came to fashion, as well as impeccable style and taste. She was also a lifelong animal lover with a soft-spot for the SPCA. She will forever be remembered as the epitome of a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, and the love of her life and husband, Edward Schmidt in 2013.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Nina Sutton, and her granddaughters, Victoria (Tori) and Lily Sutton, to whom she was beloved "Nonie."

The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Manganiello, who faithfully cared for Norma and her husband since he began his practice until Norma’s passing.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Avenue, in Exeter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday at 11:00am at St. Maria Goretti Parish , 42 Redwood Dr., Laflin.

Those attending the funeral should go directly to the church on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Luzerne County SPCA, 524 E Main St, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.

To Nina & family:
We are saddened by the passing of your Mother, Norma.
We are unable to attend the viewing & Mass for your wonderful Mother & neighbor,
since I had a spinal procedure done yesterday & orders are to stay inactive for a few days.
Me & Jack were outside Sunday afternoon, when we received the News of Norma's
death.
We both said a prayer for her soul as she passed us by.
God Bless all of you, in this time of great sorrow.
Sincerely,
Jack and Jeanne Beccaris
