Edward F. Farrell, 86, Wilson Street, Exeter died Tuesday,Sept. 6, 2016, at the United Methodist Homes, Wesley Village Campus, Pittston.
He was born September 19, 1929 in Old Forge, PA son of the late Leo and Mary (Kraniski) Farrell and attended Old Forge schools.
A former member of the Pennsylvania National Guard, 109th Division, Mr. Farrell enlisted in the United States Army in March 1948 and retired as MSGT E8, July 1968.
He was a member of the U.S. Army Security Agency at the time of his retirement. He served on the Berlin Air Lift in 1948 and served tours of duty in Germany, England, Okinawa, Laos, Cambodia, Indo China, Thailand and Vietnam serving during the Vietnam conflict.
His decorations include the WW II Occupation Medal with Berlin Airlift Device, Medal for Humane Action, National Defense Medal, Army Commendation Medal W/3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Laos Expeditionary Force Medal, Vietnam National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Bronze Star.
Mr. Farrell was employed by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Employment Security, Wilkes Barre Office as an Employer Relations Representative, retiring in July 1991 after 20 years of service.
He was active in community affairs as a Charter member of the Exeter Park Volunteer Hose Company; former President of the Wyoming Area Band Parents Association; Former Knight of Columbus member 3rd Degree; President Emeritus, PESEA Local 675, SEIU; Former member of St. Anthony’s Holy Name Society and former member of St. Anthony’s Church Council, Exeter.
Mr. Farrell also served on the Exeter Borough Planning Commission, Zoning Board and as the Zoning Officer for Exeter Borough.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Ann (Iannuzzo) Farrell; daughters, Sandra A. Waskiewicz and husband Michael Waskiewicz, Leesburg, VA; Shari A. Bella and husband Jason Bella, Exeter; four grandchildren, Lauren and Aaron Waskiewicz and Justin and Ryan Bella; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Leo, Thomas, Joseph and Frank Farrell, and six sisters, Ellen Farrell, Margaret Burke, Mary Lembo, Dorothy O’Donnell, Joan Dopkin and Eleanor Revello.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9am from the Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter with Military honors accorded by the AM Vets Honor Guard.
A mass of Christian burial will follow at 9:30am at St. Barbara Parish in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 28 Memorial St., Exeter. The Rev. Michael Finn, pastor will be celebrant.
Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.
Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 5pm until 8pm at the funeral home.
