Samuel Iacone

August 12, 2016

Samuel  Iacone passed away Friday. Born to Pasquale and Josephine  Iacone on May 19, 1926; he grew up in Eastwood and lived in Syracuse for 90 years.  He graduated from Eastwood High School where he was recognized and awarded for his athletic skills as both a relay and marathon runner. Sam was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 18, serving  his country in the European Theater. He was wounded, captured as a POW, and ultimately awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his return home, together with his father and brother he carved a successful career as a partner in the family business, Patsy Iacone & Sons Mason Contracting.
An avid outdoorsman, Sam was a member of the Oneida Lake Assn., and for  50 years he gave his family and friends wonderful summers at his camp on “Pop’s Lake” at Shackelton’s  Point. Over the years he was also a member of the American Legion and the Society of the First Division. A communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, Sam always put family first, and rarely missed a school concert, special ceremony, graduation or commemorative occasion.
With his family by his side, Sam was a 2015 participant in Honor Flight Syracuse -Mission 005. While it has been said that “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away”, the cherished memories of Sam by those who knew and loved him will live forever as he truly exemplified The Greatest Generation.
Sam was predeceased by his wife, the former Helen Szaraz, in 2003 -his bride of 55 years; two brothers: Francis and Richard Iacone; one sister, Annette Iacone as well as his lifelong  friend and hunting & fishing partner, Jack Kelly.
He is survived by his five children, Suzanne Iacone, Patricia Ferrara (Carmine), Margaret Burke (Kevin), Carol Eaton (Andrew) and Daniel Iacone; nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, along with his niece, nephews and cousins. Special  thanks to his kind , fun and comforting caregiver, Jody Lamitie.
