Kurt Marschall
June 27, 2015

Kurt Marschall, 91, of Fremont, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2015, after a long illness.
Kurt was born in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1924, where he received his education in orthotics and prosthetics before emigrating to the United States in 1956.
In 1962, Kurt founded Empire Artificial Limbs in Syracuse, NY, which later merged with Rochester Orthopedic Labs and was renamed Empire Orthopedic Labs in 1965.  The company also operated offices in Utica and Corning.
Over the years, Kurt was a faculty member or instructor of orthotics and prosthetics at Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical Center, New York University and Northwestern University.
Kurt authored numerous articles in professional publications and was credited with the introduction of new prosthetic techniques in the United States.
Kurt was a charter member and President of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP) and also served with sister organizations American Orthotics and Prosthetics Association and American Board of Certification for Orthotics and Prosthetics.
Kurt came out of retirement in 1989 to make the first of several trips to Yerevan, Armenia, as chief prosthetist and instructor for the World Rehabilitation Fund’s prosthetic-orthotic program.  The program fitted earthquake victims and other needy patients with prosthetic devices and instructed Armenian students in the art and science of orthotics and prosthetics.
In 1994, Kurt was awarded the Titus-Ferguson Lifetime Achievement Award by AAOP in recognition of the accomplishments and contributions he made toward the growth and development of his profession.
Kurt enjoyed playing tennis, swimming, walking his dog, and was active in the Arion Stein Club and Schlaraffia societies.

Kurt is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elaine; his two sons, Anthony (Nancy Green) and Peter (Mary Gasparini); and four grandchildren.

Private services were held on July 1, 2015, at Gang Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 441 West Kirkpatrick St, Syracuse, NY  13204.

Dear Elaine,
I saw the passing of your dear husband today. I wish to express my deepest sympathy for your loss.
Kurt was a great role model for many in our community and other communities around the world. His work will always be a testament of the values you and he shared with each other and the rest of the world.
The connection we had was with the I2eye.com company I started in 2000.
Your investment made a great impact on our company, I wish I could have stayed and made it more valuable..........but fate chose otherwise.
Please accept my condolences once again for your loss.

With Love and Prayers,
Patrick J. Nugent

Dear Elaine,
I learned that Kurt passed away recently from my sister Christina, and I wanted to let you know that I am sorry to hear this news of your loss. I have so many happy memories of you and Kurt, attending parties at my parent's home. Kurt's hearty laugh at some joke that my father made comes to my mind, and I can still see you looking over at him , giggling to see him so happy. I know the most recent years were difficult for you and your family. We acknowledge Kurt's astonishing accomplishments through his life's work and the many wonderful times we shared with him. God grant you peace, Elaine. Sincerely, Simone (Wuerslin) Montgomery
