Donald J. Mikolajczyk
March 30, 2013
Donald J. Mikolajczyk, 62, of Syracuse, died peacefully at home on Saturday, March 30, 2013. He was respected as a dedicated horticulturist who had worked for Zerillo Greenhouses and the City of Syracuse Parks Department. Don graduated from Hornell High School in 1969 and came to Syracuse to attend SUNY/ESF. He will be remembered by his many friends for his cheerful nature and his kindnesses to others (especially dogs) who needed a helping hand.
He is survived by a sister, Esther Swetland of Portville; a brother, Robert of Hinsdale; and several nephews and nieces.
A celebration of Don's life is planned for the afternoon of Saturday, April 13, at Rooters at the Tops Valley Plaza on South Salina Street just south of Interstate Route 81 Exit 17. Don was fond of socializing there with his dog, Wink, and is expected to join his friends in spirit as we recall and celebrate the good old days we shared with a wonderful friend to all he met.

My condolences to Don's surviving relatives and circle of old friends. He was a kind, sweet and gentle man. I believe that he was only 19 or 20 when I first met him in Syracuse, probably in the fall of 1971. He had long hair secured in a ponytail and was never without a very wide-brimmed felt hat. There was almost from the beginning a dog named Misty. Rest in peace, Don.

Don and Misty go back to the Rock City days when Don rigged a milk crate to haul Misty around with him on his bike. Many years later, Misty was in a family way and gave us Sherry and Chablis to keep her company.

I had met don in my late 30s or early 40s. we had similar interests in growing plants and our dogs. he would always offer a bet if we disagreed on something, and I stopped betting him because he was most of the time right. He opened my eyes to a new life that wasnt stereo typical as I thought it would be. We used to chat daily on the phone, I am missing him and the conversations and his twist on life that he offered.
