I''ll miss, but never forget my "Uncky Walt", probably the most patient person I have ever met. Around 1954 I started a journey and some of the best days of my life on the fender of Uncky Walts Allis Chalmers WD. From that fender I learned to love farming, learned about life, hard work, dedication and Brown Swiss cows. Walt helped me build my first race car in the garage after milking at night. He loved all of us kids and was better than any teacher we ever had. I will miss him forever. I love you Aunt Deed and Janet, we have many wonderful stories to tell.

I spent the first 25 years of my life on Pompey Hill in my parents home. I remember them speaking highly of “good” neighbors. Thirty three years ago my partner then, my husband now had the good fortune to make a home next door to Walter & Dorothy Ammann and their landmark The White Cross Farm. In 1979 Walt & Dorothy were newly weds and lived in Dot’s home. We were homesteaders living in the house next door, trying to figure out how to make our place our own.

Over the next 33 years our relationship evolved from being the folks next door to being neighbors to one another…… Good neighbors. The kind that my parents spoke highly about. We have shared a great deal over the years as good neighbors.

On the farm, there have been lessons….. births of animals of course…. special births of Walt & Dot’s grandchildren….and of my own children. Their have been many, many stories shared between us…..of Walt & his family as immigrants and as farmers….and as would be travelers. Mark & I witnessed barn dances, hay rides, planting, harvesting , coming and going of farm hands with whom Walt shared his hard work ethic and Dot shared her tasty cooking. Walt conveyed his value of tools and equipment well cared for and in good working order…..as well as his pride in keeping his farm in neat order. Over the years our neighbors lawn has been filled with handsome men in Leiderhausen and women sharing their Swiss heritage as the White Cross was the place for many a Swiss picnic. So many great memories with our neighbors- family weddings, graduations, birthdays…lots of them!

We have shared much beyond the essentials of food & water…. flowers, a rototiller, a garden, a snow blower, love of dogs & cats…..a few hands of cards and best of all we shared smiles about the drifts of fallen leaves the wind carried from his maple trees each autumn and laid in our lawn.

Walt and my dad were both farmers. Walt’s birthday was February 13th, so was my Dad’s. Walt was not only a good neighbor, he was a second father to me. He knew it. We spoke of it. He reinforced the seasons and what they bring- the wind, the rain, the snow and the sun. You need it all. Walt reinforced to me in my second twenty five years what my own father had taught to me in my first twenty….. the importance of good friends and family and self reliance. I am grateful for so much.

Over the years we have come to know not only each others joys but each others families’ sorrows…..and it is at this time I look into my heart and see that the reasons for my tears are too many to recount to you all.

I do know that I am sorrowful today and that my tears are for my good neighbor who has passed. In truth, the tears that I weep are for that which has been my good fortune in knowing Walt and the delight that was shared with my good neighbor.

Walt, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Ellen

There are so few farmers around that our "neighbors" include White Cross Farm and Walt. We will miss him. Our deepest sympathies to all of the family.
