John W. Spiegel

John William Spiegel, 96 of Syracuse passed away on Sunday at home. life resident of Syracuse he was born on July 31, 1920 to Norbert V. Spiegel and Marguerite Schiller Spiegel. He was a 1938 graduate of North High school and attended Syracuse University for two years. John enlisted in the Air Cadet Program in 1942. He served during WWII in the Army Air Force Communications Service as a Flight Director and Air Traffic Controller. He was two years in Nigeria and Morocco at the Marrakesh Air Base.
Discharged December 5th 1945 he married Doris M. Barthel in February 26, 1946.
He managed with his brother in partnership the family business "Spiegels' Food" on the corner of Danforth St and First North, next to Keller and Weber's Meat Market. The store was a third generation business, running from 1900 to 1972.
John worked several years as credit Manager and food service salesman for S.M. Flickinger Co. Later working as a teacher assistant with handicapped children for the Syracuse School District retiring in 1986. During retirement he and his wife took many cruises and vacations in Maine.
He was an avid sports fan of Syracuse University. He enjoyed fishing on Oneida Lake, also golf, bowling, square dancing and playing pool once a week with his many friends. John was a lifetime member of Assumption Church and the Pastimes Athletic Club. He was a member ot the retired teachers Association. He was predeceased by his son in law Marty Parkinson

He is survived by his wife of 70 years Doris, a son Jack (Sue) Spiegel, three daughters, Susan (Michael)
Diehl, Janice Parkinson, Terri (Chris Kowalski) Monnet, a brother Norbert (Carol) Spiegel, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial Friday at 11:00am in Assumption Church. Entombment in Woodlawn Mausoleum. Calling hours are Friday 10-11 am in the Church 812 N. Salina St.
