John Steinberger

John Steinberger, age 93, died peacefully at home. He was born on September 24, 1919 in Bavaria, Germany, coming to the United States at the age of 4 years. He graduated from East Syracuse High School and CCBI. He was a communicant of St. Matthew church.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rosemarie, and three children, Nancy (Mark) Wadopian of Manlius, Roseanne (James) Burton of North Syracuse, and John (Lisa) of Fort Mills, SC, a sister, Marie Schotthoefer, five grandchildren Amanda Chmielewski, Chris Wadopian, Jessica Tietje, Julia Steinberger and Jamie Burton and two great grandsons, Andrew Babcock and Lucas Burton. He was predeceased by his brothers Frank X. and Joseph C..
John was a veteran of World War II serving in the European theater as a sergeant in the 94th Cavalry Recon Squadron. After the war he served the US Military Government Civil Affairs in Bavaria for 2 years where he met his beloved wife Rosemarie.
John was a member of VFW Post 9576, the East Syracuse Fire Department Benevolent Association, and Boy Scout Troupe 53 as an assistant scoutmaster and committee chair. He retired from Land O' Lakes as a sales representative for 37 years and Peter's Groceries for 17 years.
John was an avid sportsman who loved fishing, hunting and camping in the Adirondacks until the age of 80. John and Rosemarie celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in October with a trip to the Adirondacks.
Services 8:15AM Monday at Gang Memorial Chapel 9:00AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Matthew's Church. Burial in St. Mary"s Cemetery, Minoa. Calling hours are Sunday 2-5pm at the funeral home 104 Fordham Rd. at Teall Ave.
