Joseph S. Turchetta (Joe or "Mr. Joe") died on Sunday, October 14, 2012 following a long, fulfilled and inspirational life. He was 89 years old.

Joe was born on August 25, 1923, in Altoona, PA. to Serafino and Maria Vincenza Turchetta. He was one of eight brothers and sisters. He attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel grade school and Altoona Catholic High School where he played football and basketball. He enlisted in the Army and was one of 10 men picked to go to Headquarters Division Station in Greenland during World War II. Upon returning from the war, he became the proprietor of Joe's Atlantic Service station, Altoona, PA. He prided himself on sponsoring the local high school football and basketball teams and it was during this time he became a staunch Notre Dame football fan.

On November 16, 1957 he married the love of his life, Miss Hilda L. Mittendorfer. In 1961 he moved his family to Maryland to take a job with the National Security Agency. He was a devoted civilian servant for 26 years, retiring from NSA in 1986. Joe doted on his wife and family and spent much of his time perfecting his yard, growing vegetables in his garden, fishing, and coaching his daughters in softball. He enjoyed photography, woodworking, model trains and watching his favorite Baltimore sports teams on TV. Following his retirement he worked as Chief of Security at the Empire Towers in Glen Burnie, MD.

Joe was a devoted Catholic who spent much of his life volunteering at the church. He served nine years on the Liturgy Committee, served 20 plus years as an usher, was President of the Holy Name Society; and was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus for over 45 years. He was awarded the Governor's Citation in 1995 for his active role in numerous civic and charitable endeavors across the community. He was also recognized with the 1995 Archdiocesan Medal of Honor. He ran the St. Jane Frances blood drive for over 14 years earning the church an award for most pints collected. A fine woodworker, Joe built whatever the church needed, from the Nativity scene at Christmas to the signs and placards used around the church. He also sponsored the Living Rosary, which he made, at St. Jane Frances elementary school.

In addition to Hilda, his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Joe is survived by his eldest daughter, Kathy
Brown of Pasadena and his youngest daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Dave Voigt of Millersville; and his five grandchildren, Eric, Justin, Adam Brown and Erin and Katie Voigt.

I am a Brother Knight of the McGivney Council and a friend of Brother Turchetta. "Mr. Joe" and I had several connections; both Army veterans, both Agency employees and both Brother Knights. Mr. Joe was one of my KoC mentors, when he was a member of the McGivney Council and was was extremely helpful to me during my term as the McGivney Grand Knight. It wasn't until I read his obituary that I realized that I (and my wife, Julie) know his youngest daughter, Patty, and her husband, Dave Voigt. Mr. Joe was a very special person - - I am out of state and will not be able to attend his viewing or the funeral but I want his family to know the they will be in my prayers. May "Mr. Joe" Turchetta rest in peace forever. Larry & Julie Foster

Joe was an incredibly wonderful, warm and loving man. Kind, forgiving, caring... there are so many words that express him. But above all, he was a family man. In every conversation he was sure to tell you how proud he was of his family, his wife, his daughters, his grandchildren... he loved nothing more than to share his joy of the loves of his life. And his smile... it would light up the room when he entered, and you simply felt graced in his presence. We will miss him, and always hold him dear as we remember his stories, his wisdom and his love. Til we see him again. God Bless him. May he give you all strength from above. Love to all of you at this time. Tom, Kathy, Brock and Pierce

When we moved to Pasadena forty years ago, Joe and Hilda took us under their wings. Joe showed us city folk how to mow and take care of our yard, explained to us how a septic tank works.....Kathy and Patty baby sat our kids... Hilda supplied us with food when I was sick. Joe will be greatly missed.
He and his family has a piece of our hearts.

Mrs. Hilda, I''m very sorry to hear about Mr. Joe.
He always had the best 4th of July fireworks in his backyard.
He was always busy building something.
He had the nicest, cleanest cars.
He never got mad at us kids for climbing his fence to retrieve the baseballs we hit or threw in his yard.
He was one of-a-kind & will be greatly missed in this world.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Aunt Hilda & Kathy, I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I feel so bad I never made it back to visit Uncle Joe. I remember how dad never wanted to go back to visit his brother becuae he felt like a burden to him. But every time we picked him up from his trip he always said what a great time he had with Uncle Joe and you. Fishing, crabbing, ball games, those trips really made his year. I know they are both together again. All my love & prayers to you. Anthony
