Esteral Paul Downey, age 85, a resident of Pasadena for 60 years, passed away on June 16, 2018 at his home after fighting liver cancer for more than a year.
He was born on March 19, 1933, in Covington, Virginia, to the late Etta and Fred Downey, Sr. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving for 33 months in the Korean War. After the service, he worked for the Davidson Chemical Company for 44 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Marine Corps Color Guard, and Kinder Farm Park, where he liked to volunteer much of his time. As a carpenter he enjoyed building furniture and homes, and he always loved spending time with his family and friends.
Along with his parents, Paul is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years: Bertha Downey; and his brother Fred Downey, Jr.
He is survived by his loving daughter Kim Eichelman and her husband Ed; his two devoted sons: E. Paul Downey, Jr. and his wife Christine, and Rory Downey, Sr. and his wife Beth, of Mississippi; his two brothers Garland and Lonnie Downey; his sister-in-law Audrey Werner; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Family requests friends visit the Gregory J. Gonce Funeral Home, 169 Riviera Drive, Pasadena, on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. His memorial service will begin at 7:30 PM, during the evening visitation. His burial on Friday, with military honors, will take place at 1:45 in Maryland Veteran’s Cemetery, Crownsville.
