Rollin E. "Sam" Carney Jr.

Rollin E. “Sam” Carney Jr., Age 80, of 215 N. Detroit St., LaGrange, IN died Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 7:46 A.M. at his  residence.  He was born in LaGrange, IN on May 11, 1930 to Rollin E. & Adah (Caldwell) Carney.  He married Estella Johnson on June 28, 1953 in LaGrange.  She survives.  Sam graduated from LaGrange High School in 1950 and then joined the Army in 1951.  He served as a Sgt in the Korean Conflict.  After serving, he attended the Indiana College of Mortuary Science and graduated in 1954. Sam then went into business with his brothers, Operating, as second generation, Carney-Frost Funeral Home in LaGrange. He has remained an integral part of the funeral home.  In 1964 he and his wife opened Carney-Decorating Center in LaGrange and have continued to operate that business to present.  In 1992 they opened the M & N Bed & Breakfast in LaGrange as well as starting the Brick House Inn in 2003. Sam & Estella received the LaGrange Citizen of the year award in 2003 and in 2009 received the DAR Historic Renovation Award for all of the efforts they have made to improve historical buildings in LaGrange including – The Valley Line Depot in 1989, the Crocker House in 1991, The Frisbey House and The Brick House Inn.  He was a member of the LaGrange United Methodist Church,   F & A Masonic Lodge # 76, American Legion Post #215 and Order of the Eastern Star # 251. Along with his passion for animals, Sam loved LaGrange.  His dedication and commitment to LaGrange could be seen by all in his efforts to preserve the historical brick streets and buildings as well as providing and maintaining the flowers and seasonal decorations in downtown LaGrange for many years.    He is survived by; His Wife - Estella Carney of LaGrange, IN.  1 Daughter - Cindy & (Steve) Pasternak of Roanoke, VA.  1 son -  Patrick & (Karoline) Carney of LaGrange, IN.  6 Grandchildren - Rollin Carney, Peter Carney, Sean Carney, Seth Carney, Vincent Carney and Ashley Carney.  1 Great Grandchild.  He was preceded in death by; his Parents, 3 Brothers – John, Willard and Frank Carney.  1 Sister – Alice M. LeRoque.  1 Son – Sean Carney and 1 infant brother.  Visitation will be held on Friday July 2, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at Carney-Frost Funeral Home, LaGrange, IN.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at the LaGrange United Methodist Church, LaGrange, IN. with the Pastor Chris Danielson officiating.  According to his wishes, cremation will take place and burial will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange, Indiana with full Military Rites by the American Legion Post #215.  Memorials may be given to the Donor’s Choice.  On Line Condolences may be sent Carneyfrost@earthlink.net.  Carney-Frost Funeral Home is in charge of the Arrangements.
