Carl G. Huff

Carl Gordon Huff,  59, of Mongo, Indiana, formerly of Baltimore, Maryland, died at home in Mongo of cardiac myopathy. He was born on May 13, 1950 to H.Lee Huff and Ruth H. Roulette.  He attended Immanuel Lutheran School before moving with his family to Wilmington, DE in 1960 and then to Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of the Lansdowne Alden High School. Following high school, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. Eventually returning to Baltimore, he managed a half-way house in the city and was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and sponsored a number of individuals who suffered from addiction.  He was the founder of numerous AA and NA groups in various locations during his life. As a youngster, Carl was interested in all things mechanical and maintained that interest throughout his life. His sister, Susan, recalled that as a youngster Carl had unlocked a "child-proof" gate and proceeded to make a few telephone calls, some of which were international calls. He was a bright and witty individual who was known for his self deprecating sense of humor. He owned a number of unusual vehicles which he kept in working order until his death. His hobby eventually turned into a career.  For a number of years he owned his own business, Century Appliance, in South Bend, IN, where he enjoyed combining his mechanical gifts and his sense of humor to satisfy his desire to help people.  Most recently Carl was employed by NIPSCO in LaGrange County.Carl became a member by baptism of the Kern Road Mennonite Church in South Bend, Indiana on Easter Sunday, April 11, 1993.  He was an active member of the church and a small group within the church, often sharing his positive attitude, quick wit, love of music, and helpful spirit. Carl served as a faithful advocate and mentor to Jacob Downs, Berrien Spring, MI, throughout Jake’s high school years and beyond.  In fact, even after his move to Mongo in 1999 Carl continued to drive across the state to participate regularly at Kern Road, especially to connect with Jake at the monthly youth-advocate breakfast and in worship.  During the past several years Carl was active at the Mongo United Methodist Church, Mongo, playing his drums each week in the contemporary worship service.  Friends and family of Carl are invited to join together in worship services remembering Carl.  The Mongo United Methodist Church, SR 3 N, Mongo, will remember Carl during the contemporary worship service at 11:30 a..m. on Sunday, March 22, Pastor James D. Bartlett officiating. Another service will be held at the Kern Road Mennonite Church on Sunday, March 22, at 4:00 p.m. at 18211 Kern Road, South Bend, officiating will by Pastors Andre Gingerich Stoner and Dave and Janice Sutter.  Carl’s remains are to be cremated and will be scattered by air over the Chesapeake Bay by his stepfather Bill Roulette. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth H. Roulette of Tilghman, MD and his father, H. Lee Huff of Beverly Hills, Florida. He is survived by his stepfather, William U. Roulette of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, his sister, Susan Kemp of Wittman, Maryland, his brother, Cary Huff, (Annette)of Las Vegas, Nevada, a niece, Summer Huff and two nephews, A.J  Huff and Nicholas Huff.  Until his death, Carl enjoyed the company of his beloved pets, Kitty and “Bob the Bird.”
